    Provenance
: About this basket and the collection this basket comes from. From Northfork Rancheria Western Mono/Monache Indians just south of Yosemite National Park. Grandmother of owner was a schoolteacher in Sugar Pine, California (in the mountains near Fresno California) and collected local baskets between 1910-1925. Of 23 Mono baskets in the collection eight were made by Mono weaver Mollie Cheppo/Chepo and one each by Mrs Bill Sherman, Emma Burns, "Old Noonie", Marry Brown and Maggie Walker, Rose Kinsman, Mariposa Nayo and "Old Joaquin". Mono Basketry by some of these same weavers may be found at the Autry National Center of the American West. The Northfork Mono territory lies between that of the Yosemite Miwok to the North, the Yokuts to the West and South, and the Paiute to the east. Most baskets in the collections (such as this one) are in perfect or near perfect condition with small stitches and fine even weave. The collection includes/included four bottleneck forms, one pictorial (three women and three tables motif), two polychrome (three color including black and red), These Monache/Western Mono baskets are coiled using sedge (light), brackenfern root (black) and sometimes with unpeeled redbud(brick-red/red-brown). This basket and the others in the collection were on long-term loan to the San Bernardino (California) County Museum from the mid 20th c until 2014 when the family took the baskets back from loan. This is the first time these baskets have been offered for sale since they were purchased from the original; weavers in the 1910-1925 era.
