Large Solid Griffin dragon scroll wood carving Antique architectural salvage. This massive 1800s solid jcarved hardwood griffin stands 26” tall , has a 26” wingspan and is about 18” deep. It is heavy at about 18 pounds. There appears to be 4 pieces combined. The entire front from the bottom of the claws to the top of the head is one piece . The back of the griffin is another solid piece . Both wings were separate carved pieces that appear to be doweled in with tabs holding them on. They have a small gap where they meet the body and can easily be tightened up. We have not done anything to the piece. It still has its dust from where it’s been sitting since the 1940s . We have been told this was one of two that were the base for a massive piece of furniture in the foyer of the New York State Capital building. The top of the head and wings have flat areas to support that it supported something very big. The owner had it in his possession since the 1940s. He has passed on and the family has decided to sell. They have had many offers over the years but we’re not interested in selling until now .
