    Description

Victorian Child's Brown Aesthetic Transferware Biscuit Jar or Sugar Pot
LITTLE GIRL WITH CATS AND DOG
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890
This is a wonderful child's transferware biscuit jar or covered sugar, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the round, melon shaped sugar box stands about 4-1/2 inches tall. The decoration is transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown or sepia.
The piece depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, sitting on a doorstep with a cat in her lap, a kitten drinking from a bowl of milk beside her, and her loving dog sitting at her knee. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies. The edge of the lid is decorated with cross hatching and fruits.
It is marked with pattern number 780 and registration number 106741, registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Pets", "Little May" or "Girl with Pets".
The little covered jar is in
    great
    condition, with spoon dings
    and wear
on the inside rim and no chips, cracks, or repairs. Minor glaze skips and typical transfer imperfections, original to the making. The piece displays beautifully. Its a great example of naive and whimsical early wares!
Children's aesthetic transferware is highly sought after, and animal lovers and veterinary medicine folks love it! A perfect gift for that special someone!
